Guthrie ACE School - A Day in the Life of Our Students

Our Guthrie A.C.E. school has a routine that is different from that of most public and private schools. At Grace Christian Academy, we encourage our students to take responsibility for their own education. Here is what a day in the life of one of our students looks like:

8:15 - 8:45 a.m.  -  Students arrive at the Guthrie Church of the Nazarene the location of our Guthrie A.C.E. school. They put their backpacks in their locker and then assemble in the sanctuary for their morning pledges and announcements. Our students pledge allegiance to the American Flag, the Christian Flag and to the Bible.

Afterwards the names of any students who have passed a test are called out and all the children cheer in encouragement. Achieving goals is one of the ways we help our students build confidence.

8:45 a.m.  -  Time for school work to begin. Each child is assigned a cubicle with a desk and two flags: an American flag and a Christian flag. Most children have five or six different assignment books covering the crucial subjects of math, English, word building (spelling), science, social studies, and literature for the older students. Other subjects offered include a foreign language.

The children are free to choose whatever subject they would like to tackle first, but they are required to finish one subject before morning break, which is at 10 a.m. The A.C.E. curriculum is a self-explanatory curriculum, but should the children have any questions, they can raise their American flag, and one of the three teachers assigned to the room will come over and explain the material to them.

10:00 - 10:15 a.m. -  Time for a break. The children can either eat a snack at one of the lunch tables or play ball in the gymnasium.

10:15 to 11:30 a.m. -  Back to work, the children tackle their next subject. If they have signed up for piano lessons, they are pulled out individually for a half-hour private lesson in the worship center and then go back to their school work. We also offer a P.E. class to our students.

11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. -  Lunch and recess.

12:30 p.m. to 1:50 p.m. -  Back to work again. At our Guthrie A.C.E. school, children are encouraged to finish their work by offering rewards, such as permission to do the A.C.E. reading program once they have finished all their school work, play games on a tablet or play board games.

Children love these games and the chance to play quietly together and typically finish their schoolwork before the last break.

1:50 p.m. to 2 p.m. - Last break. Children can either eat a snack or play ball in the gymnasium.

2 p.m. - 3 p.m. Our Grace Christian Academy students either finish their schoolwork for the day or if their work is done, they can play on tablets or play board games. If a student has not finished his schoolwork for the day, he must take it home, and finish it in the evening.
